My name is Dean. I'm running the 2012 Antarctica Marathon to raise money for conservation and penguins!

So, um, explain again why Dean is running a marathon in Antarctica…

July 8th, 2011

The most common question I receive, when people hear about my grand adventure to Antarctica, is also the simplest.

“Why?”

Like all of life’s deepest questions, this one has many answers.

Because Antarctica has the unmitigated audacity to EXIST.
This is the bottom of the world; the last continent. It’s the closest thing we have to exploring a different planet. I feel alive just thinking about it.

Marathon Tours pioneered the race.
Amazingly, some fine folks from Boston decided to do a crazy thing and organize a race in the frozen South. People never cease to amaze me.

The world is smaller than ever.
We live in a fascinating, golden age where travel to the far reaches of the globe is eminently possible. I can actually get there.

Time is short.
I’m going to Antarctica because life is fleetingly short. I have grown old enough to understand what is meant by “bucket list”. Thankfully, I’m still young enough to do something about it.

Because I CAN.
I mean no immodesty. I’ve paid my dues running endless miles on roads and trails. I’ve trained myself rigorously. A marathon is something I can do.

I’ve been chosen to serve the penguinkind.
Marathon Tours chose me for this great adventure. They’ve agreed to send me to Antarctica. In return, I’ve committed to raise money for a wonderful conservation non-profit called Oceanites (Ocean-Eye-Tees), an organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Antarctic ecosystem and our delightful friends, the penguins. I run to honor their trust and the trust of all who donate.

Some may think fundraising an onerous task, but I receive it with joy. I truly, passionately love the natural world. I believe it is our duty as humans to understand it, protect it and preserve it for our children. We should do this for a simple reason:

We can.
